Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the upcoming release of your digital comic series, Love in Time, with Tapas! For those who may be unfamiliar, what can you share with us about the premise?
Ki Hong Lee: Thank you! Love in Time is about Locke, a time-traveling scientist from the future, who travels to the 1800s in search of the origins of a virus that threatens to wipe out the human race in his time. A malfunction leaves Locke trapped in the 1800s, and he has no choice but to wait until the present day, when the next window that will allow him to travel back to the future will arrive. In order to avoid potentially disastrous butterfly effects, Locke has lived in complete isolation for over 200 years. With his one shot to return home around the corner, a chance encounter with a kind-hearted woman, Zoe, unravels his meticulously laid plans. Against his better judgment, he takes a peek into her future and discovers that she will be kidnapped and murdered under mysterious circumstances. Locke must risk his own life -- as well as the future of civilization -- in order to save the life of the only woman he’s ever loved.
BD: How did you come to work together with Chris Dinh and James Chen on Love in Time, and how would you describe your shared creative process - as well as your work with the illustrative team - in telling this story together?
KHL: I’ve known Chris for a while, and he called me up one day to catch up. He brought James along, and they pitched me this idea for a comic. I was so excited to dive into this story from the beginning. It gave me an opportunity to have more narrative control of the story and of the character - something that I had been wanting to do.
BD: At Fanbase Press this year, our #StoriesMatter initiative endeavors to highlight the impact that stories can have on audiences of various mediums. How do you feel that Love in Time’s story will connect with and impact readers, and why do you feel that this story was important for you to bring to life?
KHL: We wrote this story with K-Drama viewers in mind. So, I would say if you love K-Dramas, this might be right up your alley. It has something for everyone, in my opinion. It’s a sci-fi, drama, romance, comedy, action all rolled into one. It’s a Sci-fi Romcomtion.
BD: What makes Tapas the perfect home for this series?
KHL: Since our first meeting, we've really felt creatively connected to the team at Tapas. They've helped to guide us through a lot of the technical and artistic components in the world of webtoons. Their team has been incredibly supportive of our vision, and we feel incredibly grateful to have them help bring our story to life.
BD: Are there any upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?
KHL: We're currently developing several feature and television projects, several of which are deeply personal to us and based on our lives. Due to the long gestation period of development in Hollywood, we can't say much about them at this time, but we'll update when we can.
BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about Love in Time and your other work?
KHL: We'd love to hear readers feedback in the comments on Tapas. And you can follow our other works on our Instagrams. Ki Hong: @kihonglee, Chris: @chrisdinh and James: @jameschenfilms
