Fanbase Press Interviews Dan Goldman on the Graphic Novel, ‘Chasing Echoes,’ from Humanoids

The following is an interview with Dan Goldman regarding the recent release of the graphic novel, Chasing Echoes, from Humanoids’ LifeDrawn imprint. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Goldman about the inspiration behind the graphic novel, his creative process in working with illustrator George Schall in bringing the story to life, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the recent release of your graphic novel, Chasing Echoes, through Humanoids’ LifeDrawn imprint!  For those who may be unfamiliar, what can you tell us about the graphic novel’s premise?

Dan Goldman: Thank you! Chasing Echoes is a family road-trip of children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. They’ve wanted to make the pilgrimage to the “Old Country”—rural Poland—for years to see the land their grandfather was from, but he died before anybody got enough information out of him. So, it’s a wild goose chase mixed with family drama and historical echoes. (See what I did there?)

BD: What inspired you to tell this story (which is based on real-life events), and what can you tell us about your shared creative process in working with illustrator George Schall?

DG: I took a similar trip with my similar family in 2016. The end of the trip felt like the whole trip had turned into a story, so I started writing it that way. George Schall and I met while we were both living in São Paulo in 2010 (I think?), and we’ve been friends and colleagues who’ve flirted with collaboration ever since. One day, it was suddenly time and Humanoids went crazy for his work, which is important because I didn’t want to do something so personal with a stranger… I wanted this story to have actual love in it. And working with George has been a pleasure—I hope it’s the first of many things we do together, because the collaborative dance was easy and fun and natural.

BD: What do you hope that readers will take away from Chasing Echoes and the incredible depth of its character development?

DG: Other than enjoying the ride? I think there’s a note in the book about selective outrage. Like, if things in your own cultural history (i.e., the Holocaust in mine) make you swear “never again,” but you pay taxes and enjoy freedoms in a nation where children are herded into concentration camps and you do nothing about that, your worldview is fundamentally hypocritical.

I mean, you asked. The book itself has lots of feel-good moments and juicy drama I’m proud of, but that’s the intended takeaway.

BD: What makes Humanoids the perfect home for this graphic novel?

DG: As much of a Jodo and Moebius fan I am—and always dreamed of creating work there one day—I was very excited about the LifeDrawn line, which is more the kind of comics work I gravitate towards as an adult reader and as a writer. There have been some great releases already, and I was proud to be asked to join the line.

BD: Are there any other upcoming projects on which you are working that you are able to share with our readers?

DG: There are no beans I am currently authorized to spill.

BD: Lastly, what would you like to tell fans who want to learn more about Chasing Echoes?

DG: I really like the work to speak for itself. It’s available as of November 12th on Amazon and on ComiXology; however, you prefer to take your poison.
