Fanbase Press Interviews Torey Nelson on the Comic Book Series, ‘Dark Age: Long Shadows’

The following is an interview with Torey Nelson regarding the space fantasy comic book series, Dark Age: Long Shadows. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Nelson about the inspiration behind the series, the creative process of bringing the story to life, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: Congratulations on the release of your space fantasy comic, Dark Age: Long Shadows! For those who may be unfamiliar, how would you describe the comic’s premise, and what inspired you to tell this story?

Torey Nelson: Dark Age is a series that takes place in the far future.  A cult is trying to release a malevolent entity from another dimension.  The alien demigod Kildiir, along with the intergalactic empire known as the Legion, are all that stand between this cult and the end of the Universe.

This series is the culmination of every idea I’ve had since I was about twelve years old.  I wanted to create something that felt like a Saturday morning cartoon, but was clearly geared towards an older audience.  The story really centers around these questions:  What would a world be like if the “bad guys” had won?  What happens to them when they have to fight for the greater good?

BD: As the writer and illustrator, what can you share with us about balancing your creative process, and what have been some of your creative influences

TN: I’ve learned a ton since starting this.  It’s really a gift and a curse having to do everything yourself.  Keeping that level of excitement up from when you first start working on a project is a challenge, especially when you have 100+ pages waiting for you to draw/color and you know they won’t get done until you do it.  On the upside, you really can’t beat the freedom and control that come with being a solo creator.  I have made script changes right up until drawing a page.  Most of the writing for the initial story arc is done, so that’s a hurdle I got out of the way early.  Writing definitely comes easier for me, but I get more satisfaction from drawing. My biggest influences are late ’80’s / early ’90s animation, Frank Frazetta and Mark Schultz.

BD: What do you hope that readers will take away from your work?

TN: I hope they have fun.  Dark Age has a dramatic edge and takes itself seriously, but it’s the type of escapism that doesn’t ask too much of the reader.  It’s a very character focused series, so I’m eager to see which ones become reader favorites.

BD: Do you have plans to expand the Dark Age’s world into additional comic book series arcs?

TN: Absolutely.  I already have the second story arc outlined and am beginning to lay the groundwork for a third.  The double-edged sword of being the writer and artist is my brain can come up with ideas a lot faster than my hand can draw them.

BD: If given the opportunity to expand your series into other entertainment mediums, in what format do you hope to see it adapted?

TN: I would love to see a Dark Age animated series.

BD: Are there any upcoming projects on which you are currently working that you would like to share with our readers?

TN: I’m working on the next chapter of Dark Age.  Can’t reveal anything yet, but it’s probably going to be even bigger than Long Shadows and will head in a different direction with the storytelling.

BD: Lastly, what is the best way for our readers to find more information about Dark Age: Long Shadows?

TN: They can buy the comic and get the latest info at www.darkageuniverse.com.
