Wonder Woman Wednesday: Why Does ‘Wonder Woman 2’ Take Place in 1984?

Why 1984? Due to the popularity of the heavily ’80s-themed and influenced Stranger Things, the ’80s are all the rage again. They tried to come back before, but I was more hesitant. I guess now that I’m a few years older, I’m more nostalgic this time around. Not to mention I’m a sucker for anything hot pink!

Aside from the possibility that Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is a former Valley Girl (I totally bet she is!), there are many reasons to want to have Wonder Woman 2 take place in the ’80s.  Here are a few of the reasons that I think the power-that-be have decided to focus on this specific decade:

  • With Wonder Woman having debuted in man’s world around 100 years ago, she must have been doing something since she got here.  This is a great bonus for the character. You would never run out of stories as you’d have decades to chose from. This also gives the opportunity to explore societal differences in different eras. From “Flapper Wonder Woman” to “Hip Hop Wonder Woman” I say bring it on!
  • Given the current social and political climate, people have come to the conclusion that we’re headed toward the dystopian existence under a dictatorship and the watchful eye of Big Brother outlined in the novel 1984 by George
Orwell . . . if we’re not already there, that is. Perhaps Wonder Woman will touch on some of that.
  • The Russians. Gorbachev. Reagan. Nuclear War. Just say no to drugs. And Moon walking. Never forget Moon walking. There are more reasons to have a movie take place in 1984 than not to. I can see Diana kicking Cheetah’s butt with Van Halen’s “Jump” playing in the background.  The fact that it’s being filmed on location at a mall is giving me chills as it is.
  • And the soundtrack? Now that would be epic. I see Barbra Minerva transforming into the Cheetah god with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” playing in the background. Or better yet, “Like a Virgin” by Madonna. Now that would be radical.

I’m sure it won’t be as campy as I’m hoping, but a boy can dream. Either way, it will be totally awesome.
