Wonder Woman Wednesday: Wonder Woman’s Justice League?

How time flies. When we got to see how awesome Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was in Batman V Superman, it seemed like we had to wait FOREVER for her solo flick. Come to think of it, we did have to wait forever. Wonder Woman had never had a big-screen solo flick in all of the 75 years of the character’s existence. So, that’s something like forever.

Luckily, everything happens for a reason, and it paid off in spades. Wonder Woman has been received as an amazingly well done movie and arguably the best superhero movie ever.

So, after tearing up the silver screen, it seemed like we would have to wait forever to see Gal tear it up again in the Justice League film. And now, it’s little more than a month away. I think it will be so much fun to see Wonder Woman interact in the mostly boy’s club with fellow JL-ers Batman, Superman (Once resurrected, naturally.), Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash. I am one of the people sorely disappointed by the absence of Green Lantern. Even though the first attempt to put the character on the big screen was nothing short of abysmal, it just doesn’t seem like the Justice League without him.  With as rushed and tossed together as the other JL members’ cameos were in Batman V Superman, you can’t tell me they couldn’t whip up a little Green Lantern action. Ah well, we’ll have to settle for the rest of the team. I have a suspicion that Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman will be the breakout star this time.

You would think that with as popular as Wonder Woman was, that she would be all over this movie, and it might be perceived as “Wonder Woman’s Justice League.” She clearly outshined Superman and Batman in BVS. Here’s what Gal Gadot had to say about it in a recent Blender article: “Diana serves as the glue of the team. She finds moments to support every one of the team and make them feel stronger or believe in themselves. But this is not a Wonder Woman movie.” Hmm. Interesting. So, she’s there to comfort all the male egos? Well, whatever. The public has spoken. Make ours Wonder Woman!

It sounds like they will do her justice. I don’t think we have to worry about her becoming a hostage or having to be bailed out and protected by the big, strong men. Wonder Woman has more than proven she can stand on her own.

This is actually a golden opportunity to change the dynamic and show that Wonder Woman is not only equal, but possibly more than her male counterparts. Something tells me that Zack Snyder isn’t as committed to women’s issues as Patty Jenkins, but I’ll give him a fair shake. He seemed to have a good handle on the character in BVS. What a mistake it would be to tread backwards. Patty Jenkins has raised the bar pretty high, even for herself in Wonder Woman 2. Please make the villain Cheetah. Or Silver Swan. Or both.

The good news is that the wait for more Wonder Woman is almost over. The bad news is that after Justice League, we will have to wait until 2019 for Wonder Woman 2! Now that is forever.
