Batgirl Gone Wild

Batgirl MTBy Michael Fitzgerald Troy

I first fell in love with Batgirl when she made guest appearances on the Batman TV show from the ’60s. (Reruns! I’m not THAT old, bitches!) Yvonne Craig perfectly filled that glittery Batsuit, and I always prayed Batgirl would be on at least one of the back-to-back episodes they would re-air thrice a week.

I demanded my parents get me a Mega Batgirl doll. (Barbies weren’t acceptable toys for boys, yet – luckily – super hero dolls were fair game.). I, of course, redressed my Batgirl doll, pierced her ears with thumb tacks, and changed her identity to an adopted child named Wendy that was susceptible to frequent demonic possession. Effed up, yet hilarious!

Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s legendary graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke had the Joker crippling Batgirl and breaking a million hearts. Even though it was a brilliant story with flawless art, many a fanboy complained it senselessly ruined a good character.

Alicia Silverstone ruined Batgirl on the big screen and her acting career by really filling out the Batsuit as tabloid labeled “Fatgirl” in Batman and Robin. It’s okay, she’s a vegan and less gassy now.

One of the much buzzed about DC Comics amidst its New 52 launch was the return of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl from wheelchair-bound super informant and Bird of Prey, “Oracle.” Many a fanboy bitched that it was senselessly ruining a good character. In the capable hands of writer Gail Simone and some gorgeous covers by Adam Hughes, I’d say we’re off to a good start.

With the announcement of Batgirl as part of DC Nation’s Saturday morning cartoon features, it looks like the crimson-haired caped crusaderette is back with a vengeance. I love Batgirl, I’m glad.

Michael Troy is a deeply superficial person. Born in the midwest in the ’70s, Michael came to Los Angeles to pursue his bi-polar career path as an actor and artist. 2005 saw the release of Michael’s first published book, Homo-Hero’s Big Book of Fun and Adventure (www.greencandypress.com). Michael has contributed to the Lady Gaga comic book from Bluewater Productions and has his hand in various other upcoming projects. Michael has performed stand-up comedy at all of the major comedy clubs in Los Angeles and is making his triumphant return to the main stage of The Comedy Store in September. Michael offers an off-beat sense of humor as the star of such youtube cult classics As The Gays on Film (www.youtube.com/fullfrontaltv), A Minute With Margot, a loving tribute to Superman legend Margot Kidder (http://www.youtube.com/user/rktcommander), and currently hosts a vlog style series Lethally Blonde over at www.monsterburg.com. Sitting alongside industry heavyweight Phil Jimenez at the “Divas and Lassoes” panel for the 2010 San Diego comic-con, Michael maintains and cherishes his “underground” status. A staunch believer in Blonde Ambition, Michael hopes his new comic about shallow blonde super heroes in Los Angeles, The Blonde Squad, will set the world on fire (or at least brighten it a bit). Check out Michael Troy and Lethally Blonde updates here!!!
