Long Island Medium: Living Large

Long Island Medium MTBy Michael Fitzgerald Troy

If the old adage “The higher the hair, the closer to God” has any truth to it, the Long Island Medium‘s Theresa Caputo must be high as a kite, or so seems the bubbly, over-the-top medium (don’t call her psychic!) and subject of TLC‘s Long Island Medium. This is my new favorite show and certainly the best thing to come out of Long Island since my friend, Rita. Hi, Ro!

Long Island Medium centers around real-life medium Theresa Caputo and her adorable family. With a frosted Darth Vader Helmet, nails longer than Hell, and a personality almost as big as her hair, the Long Island Medium is strangely addictive.

We get to see your average soccer mom do group dead people channeling sessions and give messages from dead loved ones every time she stops for a latte, or gas, or groceries, or highlights, or a pap smear… you get the picture by now. It is humorous how annoyed her family is by her inability to shut off her gift. It is a little like being kamikazeed by a perfume sampler at the mall, I suppose. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to smell like a hooker. Not a cheap one anyway.

As a “sensitive” myself (I see living people. They’re everywhere!), I love shows about people with mental… powers? There must be something to Theresa’s ability, as she has a one-year waiting list and is usually on the money most of the time. Granted guessing a 90-year-old’s parents has passed is questionable psychic prowess at best, but she usually touches on things much more specific.

She’s wacky, kooky, and fun. I have a soft spot for blondes; throw in other-worldly communication, and I am so there! The husband Larry is hot in that hung-up-whipped-naked-gym-teacher-from-Nightmare-on-Elm-Street-2-shower-scene kind of way. Her kids, Larry Jr. and Victoria, are refreshingly sweet but not sappy.

I wouldn’t even have known about this show unless Rosie had tweeted about it. TLC needs to jump on the marketing stick. Luckily, I ravenously devoured all 9 episodes of Season 1 on YouTube. Season 2 starts in March. Check your horoscope or TV Guide.

Michael Troy is a deeply superficial person. Born in the midwest in the ’70s, Michael came to Los Angeles to pursue his bi-polar career path as an actor and artist. 2005 saw the release of Michael’s first published book, Homo-Hero’s Big Book of Fun and Adventure (www.greencandypress.com). Michael has contributed to the Lady Gaga comic book from Bluewater Productions and has his hand in various other upcoming projects. Michael has performed stand-up comedy at all of the major comedy clubs in Los Angeles and is making his triumphant return to the main stage of The Comedy Store in September. Michael offers an off-beat sense of humor as the star of such youtube cult classics As The Gays on Film (www.youtube.com/fullfrontaltv), A Minute With Margot, a loving tribute to Superman legend Margot Kidder (http://www.youtube.com/user/rktcommander), and currently hosts a vlog style series Lethally Blonde over at www.monsterburg.com. Sitting alongside industry heavyweight Phil Jimenez at the “Divas and Lassoes” panel for the 2010 San Diego comic-con, Michael maintains and cherishes his “underground” status. A staunch believer in Blonde Ambition, Michael hopes his new comic about shallow blonde super heroes in Los Angeles, The Blonde Squad, will set the world on fire (or at least brighten it a bit). Check out Michael Troy and Lethally Blonde updates here!!!
