Pink Hulk Smash?

pink hulk mt 986By Michael Fitzgerald Troy

So, gay characters are coming out of the shadows and respective closets. Even real life homosexuals who play straight characters are coming out of the closet. Sure, innocuous gay characters have been around for ever and ever, amen. Like Paul Lynde, Jim J. Bullock, Siegfried and Roy, and Liberace. Of course, them coming out in the height of their gay hay day would have sent the movement back to the closet faster than Skechers shape-ups.

Now, we have more savory, palatable homolebrities bursting from the closet door like Zach Quinto, Ricky Martin, and Ellen DeGeneres.

I suppose it could be argued that shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Modern Family, and Glee (God bless it!) have helped smooth over the accessibility of gayness in pop culture.

Always a day late and a dollar short, the comics industry is making attempts to integrate homosexual characters into the mainstream comics.

The Young Avengers has Wiccan and Hulkling, the poster children for the teen Pflag couple. Then, there’s Northstar of Alpha Flight who has a revolving door on his sexuality. (Come to think of it, a Dutch door may come in more handy.) DC has Batwoman and lame cliche “Bunker,” who just joined the Teen Titans.

I don’t need every character in any form of entertainment to all be gay. I long for the day when it will be a non-issue. “Pink Hulk Smash?” I doubt it, but it’d make a helluva fun read.

Michael Troy is a deeply superficial person. Born in the midwest in the ’70s, Michael came to Los Angeles to pursue his bi-polar career path as an actor and artist. 2005 saw the release of Michael’s first published book, Homo-Hero’s Big Book of Fun and Adventure (www.greencandypress.com). Michael has contributed to the Lady Gaga comic book from Bluewater Productions and has his hand in various other upcoming projects. Michael has performed stand-up comedy at all of the major comedy clubs in Los Angeles and is making his triumphant return to the main stage of The Comedy Store in September. Michael offers an off-beat sense of humor as the star of such youtube cult classics As The Gays on Film (www.youtube.com/fullfrontaltv), A Minute With Margot, a loving tribute to Superman legend Margot Kidder (http://www.youtube.com/user/rktcommander), and currently hosts a vlog style series Lethally Blonde over at www.monsterburg.com. Sitting alongside industry heavyweight Phil Jimenez at the “Divas and Lassoes” panel for the 2010 San Diego comic-con, Michael maintains and cherishes his “underground” status. A staunch believer in Blonde Ambition, Michael hopes his new comic about shallow blonde super heroes in Los Angeles, The Blonde Squad, will set the world on fire (or at least brighten it a bit). Check out Michael Troy and Lethally Blonde updates here!!!
