I Can’t Get No Satisfaction

action comics mt 887By Michael Fitzgerald Troy

I want to go where the people dance. I want some Action. I want to live. Action, I got so much to give. I want to give. I want to give it. I want to get some, too.

Alicia Bridges, I love the nightlife.

Forgive my flaming opening, but when in doubt, disco. The Superman “S” is one of the most recognizable symbols on the planet (if not the universe, if my superstitions are correct.). I don’t think there is a male alive that didn’t make a makeshift cape of some sort to emulate the man of steel. So what if mine looked more like Mr. Furley’s ascot? Who hasn’t slept to dream, per chance to fly? There is nothing more exhilarating than dreaming you can fly and nothing more disappointing than waking up and realizing you can’t. When I was little, my uncle Mike, whom I was NOT named after… that honor goes to Michael Corleone from The Godfather, capice?  Like many wide-eyed little boys, I did believe a man could fly. Christopher Reeve will always be my Superman. I was heartbroken when he passed. Obviously, Margot Kidder is my Lois Lance, hence my YouTube tribute to her, A Minute with Margot. Superman speaks to the child in all of us that still believes anything is possible. Superman is a symbol, a reminder that anything IS possible.

I have seen many incarnations of Superman over the years. Some good: I just love what Byrne did with Supes in the ’80s. Some bad: mullets and cyborgs and Doomsday, oh my!

Now, in the Nu DC Universe, despite the audacity of renumbering Action Comics for the 1st time ever, Superman’s premiere title, Action Comics, chronicling his first adventures is a pretty durn entertaining read. I’m hit or miss (usually hit) with writer Grant Morrison, having been a fan since Doom Patrol. This is a hit for me, as this is a different take on the man of steel. A lot of the core elements are in place, but Morrison manages to spin an entertaining yarn. In the new DC Universe, heroes are less liked and trusted, which I personally see as DC’s attempt at aping Marvel’s popularity with the relatable mutant outcast set.

Rags Morales always delivers solid eye-pleasing art with amazing storytelling technique, and his work on Action is soitenly no exception. I didn’t know what to expect, and this book has exceeded my expectations. I came to fly, I love to fly, and it shows. Superman made me believe a man could fly. And, I still do.

Michael Troy is a deeply superficial person. Born in the midwest in the ’70s, Michael came to Los Angeles to pursue his bi-polar career path as an actor and artist. 2005 saw the release of Michael’s first published book, Homo-Hero’s Big Book of Fun and Adventure (www.greencandypress.com). Michael has contributed to the Lady Gaga comic book from Bluewater Productions and has his hand in various other upcoming projects. Michael has performed stand-up comedy at all of the major comedy clubs in Los Angeles and is making his triumphant return to the main stage of The Comedy Store in September. Michael offers an off-beat sense of humor as the star of such youtube cult classics As The Gays on Film (www.youtube.com/fullfrontaltv), A Minute With Margot, a loving tribute to Superman legend Margot Kidder (http://www.youtube.com/user/rktcommander), and currently hosts a vlog style series Lethally Blonde over at www.monsterburg.com. Sitting alongside industry heavyweight Phil Jimenez at the “Divas and Lassoes” panel for the 2010 San Diego comic-con, Michael maintains and cherishes his “underground” status. A staunch believer in Blonde Ambition, Michael hopes his new comic about shallow blonde super heroes in Los Angeles, The Blonde Squad, will set the world on fire (or at least brighten it a bit). Check out Michael Troy and Lethally Blonde updates here!!!
