For the month of May each year, organizations across the globe venture to raise awareness for mental health and well-being issues.  Given that one in four adults (approximately 61.5 million Americans) and 46.3 percent of 13-18 year olds experiences mental illness in a given year, an earnest effort is needed to provide these individuals with high-quality, lasting mental health care and also to end the inequalities that face people experiencing mental health problems. For that reason, this week's installment of Geeks Care: How You Can Help focuses on the incredible efforts of Project UROK, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create funny, meaningful videos for teenagers struggling with mental health issues, made by people who have been there before.  Project UROK recently partnered with actor/writer/producer Wil Wheaton and The A.V. Club to share Wheaton's own experience with generalized anxiety disorder and chronic depression, and they offer a number of opportunities and programs for you to get involved.

This week saw celebrated the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's classic thriller, Jaws, and fans nationwide were treated to select screenings of the 1975 summer blockbuster in movie theatres across the US, courtesy of Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies, and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.  For that reason, this week's installment of Geeks Care: How You Can Help focuses on Shark Savers, an organization that recently merged with the non-profit WildAid to save sharks and mantas through building awareness, education, and action. In this week's edition of Geek's Care: How You Can Help, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible effort being made by comic book creators worldwide to spread international awareness of the United Nations’ upcoming Global Goals for Sustainable Development. These goals will be set by world leaders in September 2015, acting as a “to-do list” for the planet and addressing our most pressing planetary issues, including extreme poverty, hunger, health, education, sustainable energy, inequality, the environment, and more.  Through the Comics Uniting Nations project, educational comics will be distributed worldwide, free of charge, under a Creative Commons license to empower people everywhere to become heroes for change in their own communities!  Led by Reading With Pictures, PCI Media Impact, PVBLIC Foundation, and Project Everyone (all non-profit organizations based in the US or the UK), in conjunction with the United Nations Post-2015 Development Planning Team, creative, academic, publishing, and technology partners from around the globe will be producing a series of informational comics tied to each of the seventeen Global Goals and then translated into eleven different languages by Translation by Design.  Given that this project is not being directly funded by the UN, all of these amazing organizations need your help to make this incredible venture a reality!
