For the month of May each year, organizations across the globe venture to raise awareness for mental health and well-being issues.  Given that one in four adults (approximately 61.5 million Americans) and 46.3 percent of 13-18 year olds experiences mental illness in a given year, an earnest effort is needed to provide these individuals with high-quality, lasting mental health care and also to end the inequalities that face people experiencing mental health problems. For that reason, this week's installment of Geeks Care: How You Can Help focuses on the incredible efforts of Project UROK, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create funny, meaningful videos for teenagers struggling with mental health issues, made by people who have been there before.  Project UROK recently partnered with actor/writer/producer Wil Wheaton and The A.V. Club to share Wheaton's own experience with generalized anxiety disorder and chronic depression, and they offer a number of opportunities and programs for you to get involved.

This week saw celebrated the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's classic thriller, Jaws, and fans nationwide were treated to select screenings of the 1975 summer blockbuster in movie theatres across the US, courtesy of Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies, and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.  For that reason, this week's installment of Geeks Care: How You Can Help focuses on Shark Savers, an organization that recently merged with the non-profit WildAid to save sharks and mantas through building awareness, education, and action. While Jaws made the Great White Shark a household name, many remain unaware of the human dangers that threaten to further diminish their rapidly dwindling population.  With your help, Shark Savers' mission can reach greater audience and serve to greater impact the health and future of sharks!

In this week's edition of Geek's Care: How You Can Help, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible effort being made by comic book creators worldwide to spread international awareness of the United Nations’ upcoming Global Goals for Sustainable Development. These goals will be set by world leaders in September 2015, acting as a “to-do list” for the planet and addressing our most pressing planetary issues, including extreme poverty, hunger, health, education, sustainable energy, inequality, the environment, and more.  Through the Comics Uniting Nations project, educational comics will be distributed worldwide, free of charge, under a Creative Commons license to empower people everywhere to become heroes for change in their own communities!  Led by Reading With Pictures, PCI Media ImpactPVBLIC Foundation, and Project Everyone (all non-profit organizations based in the US or the UK), in conjunction with the United Nations Post-2015 Development Planning Team, creative, academic, publishing, and technology partners from around the globe will be producing a series of informational comics tied to each of the seventeen Global Goals and then translated into eleven different languages by Translation by Design.  Given that this project is not being directly funded by the UN, all of these amazing organizations need your help to make this incredible venture a reality!

This is a very special installment of Geeks Care: How You Can Help, as it marks our very first interview, showcasing the incredible charitable work that is being accomplished throughout geekdom.  In addition, with Free Comic Book Day just around the corner on Saturday, May 2nd, the following interview will provide our readers in the Southern California area with an extremely fun and exciting opportunity to give back to their community on the annual geeky holiday.  Below, Fanboy Comics Managing Editor Barbra Dillon chats with Kelly Spector, Librarian for N.E.W. Academy Canoga Park, a charter school in Southern California that provides fantastic literacy programs for its students while also educating them as to the many ways that they can become involved with their community.  In this interview, Spector discusses the available programs through N.E.W. Academy, her partnership with Blastoff Comics' Jud Meyers and Rocketdyne's Tony Magee, and the impact that her students' work will have on charitable and non-profit organizations this Free Comic Book Day.

In this week's installment of Geeks Care: How You Can Help, Fanboy Comics would like to highlight the incredible efforts of independent comic book publisher Minky Ink, which publishes books written by children for children, working closely with non-profit organizations, including Children's Institute.  Minky Ink not only publishes the children's books, but the wonderful staff also educates inner-city students how to create the books and hires local artists to illustrate them.  By encouraging literacy and a love of learning in young readers - and also donating the profits of its work to charitable organizations, Minky Ink is setting a fantastic example to which we should all strive.  We at Fanboy Comics want to spread the word about their work to let you know how you can help.

Geeks Care: How You Can Help once again shines a spotlight on the fine folks at Blastoff Comics, a top-of-the-line comic book shop in North Hollywood, CA. Blastoff stocks both current comics and graphic novels as well as an astonishing collection of vintage comics for sale, providing customers with rarities that they just cannot find anywhere else. What truly makes Blastoff and its owners, Jud Meyers and Scott Tipton, stand out is their commitment to helping others in need. A portion of all of their proceeds are donated to charity, with the recipients changing on a monthly basis. This month, Meyers and Tipton have chosen to highlight the Crossover International Academy, and we want to join Blastoff Comics in educating our readers about this important organization.
