Each year, the Alzheimer's Association hosts The Longest Day, a team event that raises funds and awareness for the organization. For The Longest Day this year, Caves will join Saving Throw for a 24-hour role-playing game fundraising event, with the proceeds from the event going to the Alzheimer's Association. In this special second installment of Geeks Care: How You Can Help this week, the Fanboy Comics staff would like to highlight the generous efforts of Jason Inman (co-host of DC All Access and US military veteran) as he endeavors to send 10,000 comic books to troops overseas by January 1, 2016, in collaboration with Comics for Soldiers. Dubbed as the Jawiin Comic Drive, Inman is hoping to share the gift of geekiness with troops overseas to give them a fun reminder of home. Both new and used comic books are being accepted, and directions for how to donate the books are listed below. Since 2014, Project UROK has been taking action to fight the stigma around mental illness within the youth population while also providing practical assistance to teenagers in need of help. Earlier this week, Toys for Tots and J.C. Lee (daughter of famed Stan Lee) joined forces to launch the “It’s All About Love” online campaign to raise monetary contributions for Toys for Tots' annual toy drive. In addition, the Southern California-based after-school group, Geek Girls Society, which serves to empower and encourage young women through geeky endeavors, is hoping to expand its borders and launch new chapters in cities across the country (at no charge to girls interested in participating); however, in order to do so, they must first raise the necessary funds to qualify for non-profit status. For readers following along with my work through Fanboy Comics and The Katniss Chronicles audio drama, The Hunger Games series and the character of Katniss Everdeen have had a somewhat gigantic impact on my life, personally and professionally. The themes and character portrayals created and depicted by Suzanne Collins serve to open a larger discussion with audiences about gender stereotypes, political discourse, economic disparity, the impacts of war, and the realities of mental illness - to name only a few. While I have had the pleasure of discussing these topics at length with my Katniss Chronicles colleagues through the #TKCrevisited audio journal series, the talented folks at Project UROK and The Harry Potter Alliance - joined by Hunger Games actor Jack Quaid - are taking action to fight the stigma around mental illness and economic inequality by using the #MyHungerGames hashtag to tell their stories on social media.

As another week comes to a close, it's time for another edition of Geeks Care: How You Can Help, the weekly series that provides geeky readers with a myriad of ways to get more involved in and give back to their community. In this week's installment, we return to the fine folks at Blastoff Comics, a top-of-the-line comic book shop in North Hollywood, CA. Blastoff stocks both current comics and graphic novels, as well as an astonishing collection of vintage comics for sale, providing customers with rarities that they just cannot find anywhere else. What truly makes Blastoff and its owners, Jud Meyers and Scott Tipton, stand out is their commitment to helping others in need. A portion of all of their proceeds are donated to charity, with the recipients changing on a monthly basis. This month, Meyers and Tipton have chosen to highlight the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and we want to join Blastoff Comics in educating our readers about this important organization.

For fans of the VH1 show, Hit the Floor, many were excited to see the recently released teaser trailer for Season 3, which will launch in 2016. Many fans may not know, though, that Hit the Floor's Devil Girl Dancer, Courtney Galiano, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling, disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. It affects people in the prime of their lives, between the ages of 20 and 50, and there is currently no cure. Instead of letting it get her down, Courtney is fighting back with the help of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Team Hit the Floor. By forming Team Hit the Floor, Courtney, her friends, and her supporters hope to mobilize people and resources to raise money to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS, and they hope that you'll join them to become a part of the solution!
