‘Jonesy #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

In this issue of Jonesy, we get to see more of Jonesy’s dad. Having briefly met him in the first two issues, we know that he’s the owner of a successful donut restaurant (not a donut shop), and he loves terrible puns. Now, we get to see a bit more of his history and daily life. He’s a total dork and definitely my favorite character of the comic.

As we begin this issue, Jonesy wants to get a tattoo in order to impress her celebrity crush. Of course, her father says no, because Jonesy is only in middle school; however, Jonesy is also very stubborn and sees most other people in her life as either tools to get what she wants or obstacles standing in her way. So, in response to her father’s responsible parenting, she uses her secret power of making people fall in love to make him fall in love with “the idea of getting a tattoo.”

This opens up a very dangerous door for the comic. Previously, she made people fall in love with objects, animals, or (very rarely) other people. The ability to make someone fall in love with a concept means she can basically make people do anything she wants. Everyone in town is Jonesy’s personal plaything, subject to her whims. God help us all.

Of course, things don’t go quite as planned, and instead of letting Jonesy get a tattoo, her father ends up going on a date with a tattoo artist, a date which Jonesy decides to ruin for reasons that aren’t nearly as selfish as you might think.

We do learn one thing over the course of this issue, and that’s that Jonesy genuinely cares about her dad and wants him to be happy. Aside from the whole tattoo thing, everything she does is with his best interest at heart. Of course, she’s more than a little misguided on that front, but still, it’s kind of sweet in its own way.

There’s definite fun to be had in this comic, and, as I said, Jonesy’s dad is pretty awesome. If you’ve been enjoying the series up to this point, you’ll definitely get a kick out of this issue.
