‘Ei8ht: Volume 1’ – Advance TPB Review

Right from the beginning, we know we’re going to be in for an interesting adventure, when we’re given a color-coded guide to the art. A green background indicates the past. A purple one indicates the present. Blue is future. And then . . . then, there’s the Meld, which is something else altogether. The color code sounds confusing at first, but it’s really not. It takes no time at all to get used to and makes it instantly clear when and where we are at any given time.

As our story opens, Joshua’s ship crashes in the Meld. His memory is largely gone but comes back in flashes. We know he’s from the future, from the blue background in the flashbacks. We know he’s been chosen by a group of scientists for some sort of important mission. What that mission is and why he’s on it remain a mystery, at least in the beginning.

Besides, there are more pressing matters at hand. Without his ship, Joshua is now stranded in the Meld, a place outside of time which has dinosaurs, castles, Nazis, and much more. Joshua is quickly found by Nila, a woman born in the Meld, and her little brother, Hari, of whom she’s very protective. Nila, Hari, and a small group of oppressed citizens are fighting against the Tyrant who rules over the Meld and his right-hand man the Spear who keeps the peace with an iron fist.

There’s a lot of crazy fun in this story. There’s time travel, paradoxes, war, dinosaurs, and much more. I could go on describing it, but it’s really better if you read it for yourself. These five issues comprise a full story arc, but it seems like only the beginning of a much more intricate world, which we still have yet to explore. I assume there will be more issues released at some point, though none but these five have come out thus far. It’s a fun and interesting read, intelligently written, with some cool artwork. (And, dinosaurs! Did I mention there’s dinosaurs?) It’s definitely worth reading, and I’d love to see more in the future. Or in the past. Or the present. Or the Meld.
