‘Welcome Back #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Right from the beginning, the concept for Welcome Back is fascinating. By the end of this issue, it’s positively mind blowing. There’s a war going on between two eternal enemies. Soldiers are born with one mission: track down a specific soldier from the other side and kill them. Once both soldiers are dead, they get reincarnated, and the cycle begins again. And, again. And, again.

In the midst of this war, we’re introduced to Mali: a relatively ordinary twenty-something girl balancing an ongoing job search with a placeholder boyfriend and the occasional need to avoid an onslaught of seriously deranged stalkers and relentless press. Oh yeah, Mali is the stepdaughter of a famous (now deceased) serial killer, and though she’s done her best to escape her past, people keep finding her.

Meanwhile, one of the soldiers in this eternal war seeks out a major player from the other side and tries to coerce information from him.

This comic is difficult to describe, simply because it’s unique. Characters and missions span across different lives and different eras, and the implications of that are taken in surprising and somewhat insane directions. The less I say about it, the more you’ll enjoy it when you read it for yourself. The plot is a bit on the complicated side, but in an intricate, well-crafted way, rather than a convoluted way. If you don’t mind a few twists and turns, this is definitely a comic you’ll want to check out. Me, I can’t wait until the next issue.

*Welcome Back #1 will be released on August 19th.  Be sure to pre-order the comic by Monday, July 27th, at your local comic book shop.
