‘Lantern City #4:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Returning to his home to find his wife and child gone and the apartment in chaos, Sander becomes obsessed with finding them. When Kendal’s daughter, Lizel, arrives and almost shoots him thinking he’s a Guard, Sander discovers that they have been taken to a place called “The Underground.”  Run by a radical by the name of Brother Pont, Lizel believes he may have grabbed them as revenge against their family. They come up with a plan to communicate in secret, so as not to jeopardize Sander’s new identity.  When Sander returns to his new home in the Guard quarters, he is sidetracked when Terna is brought in for interrogation as is he. But, Blem is temporarily outranked by Sander’s superior officer and Sander is released.  Soon after, Lizel confirms Sander’s family is in “The Underground” and Sander sets out to find them.  Always told that “The Underground” is a harsh place where people kill each other over scraps of food, what he finds not only surprises him, but shocks him to the core of his being.

Without missing a beat, writers Scott and Daley begin where they left off from Issue #3. There is a nice balance of men and women with brains and courage throughout the issue, especially in the female characters of Lizel and Terna. Each page exudes energy and makes you feel like Sander is going to be caught at any moment; however, the one thing that really baffles me is that none of these Guards have ever seen each other without their helmets on.  How is that even possible? And, the interrogation of Sander by Blem feels like a repeat beat, since he already did that in the previous issue. The only new thing we learned in that sequence is that Blem has a torture chair that can turn your bones into dust.  It also was very convenient that General Canden, Sander’s superior officer, walked in just at the right moment and got him out; however, it could be that Canden is a rebellion sympathizer and he knows full well who Sander is.  Or Canden is working with Blem and the whole thing is a set up to let Sander lead them to Brother Pont. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story, and the artwork is terrific as usual.
