‘TMNT Ongoing #50:’ Advance Comic Book Review

50, huh? No, that’s not how old I am. Nor is that my IQ (although, I fully admit to never having been tested . . . ). No, that’s how many issues the ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series has been going on for. 50 issues!

Before I talk about this major issue in itself, I want to reiterate the utmost respect that I have for writers Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, and Tom Waltz.  I’ve only been reading this ongoing series since Issue #37, and every storyline has had its ups and downs (I still miss Donatello, regardless of his subconsciousness being in Metalhead.), but no issue has ever been boring.  Add all that talent with a pen to those with pencils, including artwork by Mateus Santolouco and Cory Smith, along with colors by Ronda Pattison, and you’ve put together one of the best teams in the comic book industry. This entire team started my “delve down the rabbit hole,” so to speak, and I couldn’t be prouder to have started my comic book journey with my favorite childhood superheroes, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  So, thanks and congrats to all involved over the last 50 issues!

That all being said, the last time we left our heroes-in-a-half-shell, they weren’t exactly in the greatest of predicaments. In a move I did not expect, Splinter and his sons stepped right there onto the footstep of The Foot’s front door (Say that 50 times fast!), challenging Shredder to a fight-to-the-death-style battle that would settle their ancient dispute once and for all. But, naturally, by the end of last month’s issue, our Turtles didn’t appear to be a match against Roxsteady, Bebop, and Shredder’s other greatest goons.

This month, however, our pizza-loving teenagers seem to fight much better when they fight alongside each other. Speaking of IQ, their intellect is much higher than that of Shredder’s personal mutants, and this gives them a major advantage in the Gauntlet.  Fighting Shred-head, however, proves to be a more powerful battle. But, with Splinter distracted by searching the past for clues as to what began this whole feud hundreds of years ago, will he be able to save his sons in time before Shredder takes this fight to their end?

Although this issue is “to be continued,” I am thrilled with the outcome after a successful 50 issues. Here’s to another 50 more!
