‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes #4:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Wow. Are we really more than halfway through Michael Moreci’s AWESOME Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comic book series!? Issue #4 feels like so much has happened to Malcolm, Rita, and Alex, yet with only two issues left, it also feels like our story has just begun . . .

As a recap from earlier this month, Malcolm and Rita’s son, Alex, was taken by a group of untrusting people with a whole lot of guns and bad attitude. Meanwhile, Ceasar’s family circle wants to show another group of apes who’s boss, putting “apes not hurt ape” in danger of becoming a motto of the past!

In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes #4, Malcolm and Rita come up with a plan to try and get their son back, as well as any others who have been stolen by the baddies with guns (and now, apparently, a ship). And, while Pope builds his own army of apes to rise against Ceasar, Ceasar sends Koba to handle the situation. But, with Pope becoming too dangerous, will “apes not hurt apes” have to break, simply to save Ceasar’s way of living?

I know I keep saying this with each issue I read, but it becomes more and more apparent each month: Michael Moreci has written one of the most beautiful tributes in a comic book series I have read to date! I, for one, really value Michael’s two brilliantly written storylines, and I appreciate how he interweaves both the humans’ and apes’ lives through extremely similar motifs. And, with illustrations by Dan McDaid on his side, along with stunning inks and colors by Adam Gorham and Jason Wordie, respectively, Moreci has the perfect team to show Malcolm and Ceasar the way to a (hopefully) happy ending.

Now, with the series being half over, I’m really thinking how awful, yet also grateful, we as humans can be toward one another. This series is an interesting look into the “balance of the force” we constantly take part in. (Yes, I made a Star Wars reference about Planet of the Apes, so sue me!) But, for now, all we can do is be thankful not only for what we have, but also who we have to share it with . . .

Until next month,
#BeKindToOneAnother!
