‘TMNT Ongoing #37:’ Comic Book Review

I’m a huge Ninja Turtles fan! HUGE! So, when I got word that my very first comic book review, let alone the first comic book I’ve read since I was 9 years old (Go easy on me, fellow nerds.), would be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comic, needless to say that I was excited. I was like a kid in a candy store . . . on Christmas Day . . . in Disney World.

MINOR SPOILERS BELOW

When I opened the comic to the first page, standing face to face on the deck of a battle cruiser were two of my favorite villains: Shredder and General Krang. Shredder, of course, is the villain we all remember when it comes to TNMT, but that brute of a brain was always my favorite in command back when I used to play with my Ninja Turtle action figures.

As I continued reading, learning that Shredder wanted Krang to join his forces despite their past “differences,” I knew this wasn’t going to end well. And, as always, I was right . . .

[SPOILER ALERT!]

SOMEONE DIES!? I was in shock! I almost didn’t want to read the rest of the comic book. But, I’m glad I did because . . . THEY TRICKED ME! How dare they!

The rest of the story continued as an all-out battle between Shredder and Krang on a sinking battleship. Cory Smith’s artwork beautifully captured this explosive scene, and our story ended with both villains getting away. But, I congratulate Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, and Tom Waltz on a story well written. With what started out as a curious meeting between baddies, one brain’s selfishness lead to reigniting old flames. Although I missed my pizza-loving turtles in this issue, I won’t complain about a fight between the series’ greatest villains. I look forward to more fights from Krang and Shredder in the future. Perhaps our heroes won’t have to do the dirty work after all. Turtle power!
