‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Original Motion Picture Special Edition’ – Hardcover Review

This read was a blast from the past! For all of you true Turtle fans, this comic book is a must read! We all remember the original TMNT movie from 1990, right? Well, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Original 1990 Motion Picture Special Edition is the perfect companion to our favorite ’90s movie.

It started off exactly how I remembered it: April O’Neil reporting her opinions about “The Foot” clan. She then leaves her office in the thick of the night, only to be ambushed by a gang of thieving teenagers. Until, of course, she’s saved by four largely figured shadows. All that’s left behind is Raphael’s sai, which April, of course, discovers. Next, we see our four favorite heroes celebrating in the sewers, and the rest of the story is all too familiar and downhill from there.

Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman did a beautiful job adapting his film into comic book format. You could tell each layout was handled with precise care. Even Peter Laird’s script was the perfect reminiscence of the original movie. And, with the help of Eric Talbot, this trio truly crafted unique inks for each panel. Job well done, boys!

What was an extra special treat, however, were the additional text notes and layouts made by Kevin Eastman himself discovered at the end of this comic book. Eastman’s work is truly remarkable, even at its simplest form. These sketches made this comic book all the more worth it, and I thank him for including such personal details.

In the meantime, any lover of the original 1990 TMNT movie is going to enjoy this beautiful comic book homage, so I suggest you pick it up today and add it to your collection before it’s too late! And. don’t forget . . . #TurtlePower!
