‘Transformers: Windblade #4’ – Advance Comic Book Review

The first three issues of the hit IDW Transformers series, Windblade, set up a tale of political struggles, terrorist violence, and a struggle to survive. The final volume goes one step further and forces the young title character to deal with personal betrayal and a decision that affects all Transformers, not just the ones on Cybertron. The twists and turns are heart wrenching, but, ultimately, Windblade gets a chance to grow and mature, which leaves hope for her further adventures.

Scott’s writing laser focused in Issue #3 as Windblade’s suspicions centered on Starscream. The final volume expands the emphasis without dialing down the tension, and I truly wonder how the events will affect Cybertron and Windblade’s future development. Bonds are forged and severed with disturbing ease in the scant thirty or so pages, and our young cityspeaker reveals amazing insight about Starscream’s true character as everything comes to a close. To say more would ruin readers’ enjoyment, because not knowing the full plot is key to the emotional impact. Just know that you probably should be sitting down to avoid collapsing from some of the surprises!

Stone’s artwork continues to take the story and make it dynamically visual. I especially liked getting to examine Chromia’s motorcycle form more closely in some of the panels. I also thought that the standard cover for this issue was amazing at portraying the aggression between Starscream and Windblade and loved the heavy use of reds to emphasize the point.

Somehow, Scott and Stone finished Windblade’s first story with Issue #4, and while I’m pleased with the results, I’m also a little disappointed that the mini-series has come to an end. Fortunately, there will be more of her in longer running titles, and Scott and Stone will team up again in 2015 for another Windblade-centric mini-series! If you haven’t checked it out yet, what are you waiting for? All four issues will be available on Wednesday, so you won’t have to wait to see what happens!
