‘Leaving Megalopolis: Surviving Megalopolis #3’ – Advance Comic Book Review

Okay, guys.  I want to start off with talking about how fantastic this book is. It’s been said before, and in the case of Leaving Megalopolis, it’s going to be said again. This book is really fun and really pretty. This isn’t much of a deviation from anything I’ve said before, but it really has to be said again here.

Gail Simone and Jim Calafiore take the generic superhero concept and turn it on its head, taking the superheroes and making them totally insane, thanks to a mysterious gas that was released into the city. Now, after the initial attack (and resulting graphic novel which is also pretty fantastic), the surviving members of the city of Megalopolis are banding together and trying to find a way to fight back. What I assume is halfway through this limited series (There are six special, interlocking covers), things are beginning to get pretty dire with some very specific and surprising rays of hope beginning to take shape.

Without spoiling too much, there are now three groups trying to find their own way to survive or solve the big, insane superhero threat. With all of them not quite knowing what the other is doing, it’s going to be a bit complicated.

I really need to commend Gail Simone here on her writing. She’s one of the most skilled writers I’ve seen, and not because of the typical writing skills. She has all those, but she has something that I don’t see in too many other writers, at least not in this quantity: heart. Her style is full of passion and feeling and empathy, with her words ringing true because it’s obvious how much she means every letter of it. That’s not to say that passion is missing from other creators, but Simone channels hers in a way that I can’t totally describe but that makes me very happy.

Calafiore is nailing the art, as well. These characters are dynamic and terrific, all with their own major personalities and looks. He is a creative force that cannot be ignored, with this dark and exciting world coming to life with his pencils.

I’m not sure how much longer this will be going, but I hope it’s more than six issues. While it looks to be limited, this is a series that should really be checked out, if only for some of the bits of outlandish violence and witty dialogue.
