‘Sleepy Hollow #2:’ Comic Book Review

Marguerite Bennett and Jorge Coelho continue with the four-issue story arc of Ichabod Crane and Lt. Abbie Mills as the chosen witnesses to the coming apocalypse. Fortunately, in this case, “witness” means they don’t just stand around and let it happen, but actively try to stop evil from taking over our world.

After a quiet evening at Captain Corbin’s cabin eating chicken enchiladas and playing a game called “Nine Man’s Morris” with Abbie, she calls it a night when Ichabod starts complaining about a song stuck in his head.  She leaves and a bored Ichabod stumbles upon a puzzle box. When he finally opens it, blood pours out, but something else comes with it. Ichabod is possessed by a crazed genius by the name of Colin Van Bilj who had worked with the Hessians against Washington; however, things did not end well for him, and now Abbie must save Crane from the madman within him.

I really enjoyed the story, and the dialogue was spot on as in the first issue. Ms. Bennett has really captured their voices. What confused me was the reference to the game “Nine Man’s Morris.” I didn’t realize they were talking about a game for a few panels, and there was no explanation about how it is played and whether or not it relates to the theme of the story. Maybe this was explained in the first season, but if it was I’ve totally forgotten. I did love the puzzle box idea and the whole sap-is-the-blood-of-the-tree thing. (Sorry, I don’t mean to sound cryptic, but I don’t want to give away any spoilers.) What did confuse me is why Ichabod expressed surprise that there was no sap in the puzzle box.  Why would he expect that to be in there?

The art and coloring were very well done. I especially liked how Ms. Bonvillian’s coloring gave a feeling of warmth and security inside Corbin’s cabin while the exteriors were frigid. I practically shivered looking at those pages. The issue also includes another fun short story from Noelle Stevenson.

Overall, a very enjoyable story and a definite “must have” for any Sleepy Hollow fan.
