‘TMNT Annual 2014:’ TPB Review

Turtles. Time travel. And, Triceraton. Oh my!

This is my first read of the Annual Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comic books, and I must say, it was weird.  But, a good weird.

Our story began with Donatello and Mikey setting a trap for Leo and Raph.  Typical teenagers.  Then–out of nowhere–time traveler Renet appears in the turtles’ sewer home to bring our 4 heroes to a place in time where they are needed. And, they go without hesitation! Say what now!?

Next thing we know, Kevin Eastman (co-creator of TMNT) and Tom Waltz have our “lizard friends” (You’ll understand the reference when you read this comic book . . . ) fighting aliens of all sorts in a battle arena alongside their new mate, Baltizar.  Including . . . TRICERATON!!!  Now, I remember my Triceraton action figure as a kid, but I don’t remember the turtles time traveling just to fight them.  So, again, it got weird . . .

But, the fight scenes were awesome!  Some parts were a little confusing knowing which turtle was which since almost every comic strip was in a faded sepia tone color, but I got the gist of the story thanks to Eastman’s artwork.  I would have recommended that Eastman and Waltz rearrange a few of their comic strips, perhaps showing us Renet’s backstory before introducing us to her in the beginning. But, what can I say? I’m a sucker for enemies banning together to fight a greater evil.  Eastman knows me too well!

In the meantime, I look forward to more adventures from Renet and Baltizar, lovers from another dimension!  And, don’t worry, readers. Leo and Raph get what was coming to them, but so did Don and Mikey . . .
