‘Blessings from the Condemned: A Horror Legacy’ – Book Review

In the world of horror stories, sometimes it’s nice to return to the originals, the classic frights, to remind oneself just how frightening they really are. Blessings from the Condemned: A Horror Legacy aids the true horror fanatic in the quest of fear.

The anthology, edited and collected by Robert Friedrich, contains some of the best. Prior to each short story, Friedrich has included a photograph of the author, along with some basic biographical information. I imagine the choice of which to include to be quite difficult; however, Friedrich did well with the selection process.

Edgar Allen Poe, it should go without saying, belongs in any horror anthology, and it was nice to see his “The Pit and the Pendulum” in the compilation. Friedrich also treats readers to wonderful stories such as “The Altar of the Dead” by Henry James, “The Body Snatcher” by Robert L. Stevenson, and “Pigeons from Hell” by Robert E. Howard. After the official (and technically blasphemous) public de-frightening of Cthulhu, it was refreshing that Friedrich included the original work of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Call of Cthulhu” to remind readers just how terrifying the creature should always remain. The final work, “Blood Apocalypse,” belonging to Friedrich himself, takes the reader on a winding journey at the end of the world and seems like a beginning to a much larger tale.

All in all, if you’re a fan of classic horror, this anthology brings some of the greatest tales and puts them under one cover to satisfy all of your sadistic desires to jump at every noise and sleep with the lights on.
