‘Eplis #1-3:’ Comic Book Review

All the ages, all the awesomes.

Emily and Jeremy Drouin have created a fantastic, all-ages comic book that is great fun for everyone.  Bringing to life a colorful, imaginative world, this couple really brings the goods to a series that works for the whole family.

The Drouins have crafted a wonderful adventure for kids, a sci-fi smorgasbord of intergalactic proportions.  Trying to find a way to defeat planet-devouring invaders, Dr. Archimedes creates a countermeasure powered by strange crystals called the Eplis, which have the power to stop these dastardly beings in their tracks.  The story is simple enough to follow, yet deep enough to matter.  You care about these characters greatly and can’t help but root for them.  Tossing in a few choice lines from all over nerd-dom, Jeremy Drouin manages to keep the attention of nerdy adults in the room with a definite tongue-in-cheek flair.

Emily’s characters are easy to fall in love with; the plush-like look helps her sell the emotive qualities well for kids.  The artwork inspires a sense of whimsy, and though our protagonists are spending lots of time trying not to be eaten, the fun and friendly designs work to keep from overloading on the dire consequences.  There’s no panel I’ve found that you couldn’t remove the lettering from and not have an idea of what’s going on.  The fact that the words on the page sell such a concise and wonderful story just shows how well this team works together.

If you’re looking for something to read to or with your kids and you’re a bit of a nerd (Come on, you’re reading this aren’t you?), or just enjoy comics where the violence feel more Bugs Bunny than D-Day, then this series is absolutely worth picking up.  You can order copies here.
