‘Uncle Buck:’ Comic Book Review

One of my favorite writers, Jesse Young, has released a couple of new stories. The first of which, Uncle Buck, features some pretty awesome artwork by Matt Battaglia. Now, you may be thinking to yourself, isn’t Uncle Buck a John Candy movie? You’re absolutely correct, a John Candy movie that the unnamed protagonist loves, but as the protagonist says, “This isn’t a movie, and I’m not Uncle Buck.”

A while back, Jesse set up a Kickstarter in order to publish his short stories for fans. I was more than happy to donate! Jesse’s Kickstarter was a success, and it wasn’t long before I had some of my favorite stories in my hand. Uncle Buck was a new, welcomed addition to the collection.

I really enjoyed reading Uncle Buck. It’s dark, gritty, and leaves you wanting more. Young’s dialogue had me sucked in, wanting to know what was going to happen next, and at no point was I disappointed. Writing short stories is a tricky business, because you don’t have a lot of time to set the scene, let alone motivation, but Young executes it perfectly. He’s made quite a niche for himself with his short stories and has a bright future ahead of him in the comic industry. Here We Go was the first story of Jesse’s that I read, and I haven’t missed one since. Already a talented writer then, it’s been a privelage watching as his talents have grown. It’s only a matter of time before Young’s work reaches the right hands, and a company like Image snatches him up.

Also, Young has an ever-revolving door of artists he collaborates with, making each story uniquely unique. Like I mentioned earlier, Matt Battaglia was drafted for the artwork of Uncle Buck, which adds another level of grittiness to the story.

The last thing I want to do is spoil anything for you, so please just take my word and go to Jesse’s website and read Uncle Buck. It literally costs you nothing, and I guarantee you’re gonna love what you read.

Overall: 9/10
