While I’ve discussed in my reviews before how the superhero comic genre is dominated by titans of DC and Marvel and, because of this, it can be tough climb for an indie superhero book, it’s really no surprise that fans continue to be inspired by tales of those who buck the system in order to protect the innocent and battle the forces of evil. Torrid Comics Presents a Collective Adventure of Tenacity is one of these inspired tales, and while the book is certainly rough around the edges, it is also an obvious product of pure fanboy passion and love for the superhero genre!

The second issue of the indie industrial metal comic known as Satanic Hell is now available at ComiXology, and given the seven-issue series is now being published by creator-owned indie house Alterna, it’s never been a better time to follow the band members of “Satanic Hell” as they battle religious extremism when they are “trapped in a dystopian Texas ruled by religious fanatics.” While this my not be the comic book to take to Sunday school with you, it’s chock full of in-you-face attitude, rebellious mayhem, and plenty of reasons to rock!

January is Buffy Summer’s birthday month, and, boy, did Dark Horse Comics have a gift for fans this year when it comes to the latest issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 10! Written by master scribe Christos Gage and featuring fill-in artist Megan Levens, while Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 10 #11 might be missing the undeniable talents of regular artist Rebekah Isaacs, it is so chock full of Buffy goodness that it might just be the most delicious issue of the season so far! Gage has a real knack for channeling an authentic “Whedon” feel into his plots and dialogue, so it’s no surprise that, as we head into part one of a new story arc titled “Love Dares You,” it comes with a big side order of our old friend, “the pain” (for “the pain” creates “the drama,” my friends).

Superhero comics have, for the most part, been the stomping ground of publishing titans Marvel and DC, but that doesn’t stop a number of indie creators from throwing their hat into metahuman storytelling arena. While the genre can be an uphill battle for indie creators, the pure fan passion that has been fermenting inside those who have spent years worshiping at the “cape and cowl” alter of the Big Two cannot always be contained, resulting in the birth of new, original, and, sometimes, flawed superheroes who must fly or fall on their own merits. Lady Phenom is one of these “newly born” indie superheroes. Published by The Superhero Network Entertainment Group, Lady Phenom #2 has recently been released, and while it builds upon the origin issue, adding some new and interesting elements, it still remains to be seen if Lady Phenom’s rough edges will keep the series from truly soaring with the fans.

While my review may be a little behind, The Mercenary Sea was one cleverly written and brilliantly illustrated indie comic that did not leave its fans high and dry this holiday season! The Mercenary Sea #8 dropped last week, and writer Kel Symons and artist Mathew Reynolds have gifted comic book sniffers everywhere with a double dose of The Mercenary Sea this year, delivering the next step in Captain Jack Harper’s pursuit of the mythical lost island known as Koji Ra, as well as a mini one-shot featuring Harper’s holiday spirit.

The epic and hilarious indie comic, Man vs. Rock, has returned with the next chapter of humankind’s struggle to defeat the global rock menace (without destroying themselves) in Man vs. Rock: Volume Three (written by Victor Detroy and Kevin Bieber, and with artwork by Jared Lamp). If you’ve read my previous reviews (links provided below) you already know that I’m a big fan of the satirical disaster/action comic that is Man vs. Rock, and I am happy to report that Volume Three is another issue that will have you cracking up out loud as you prep your own home for the inevitable rock attack!
