‘Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol’ – Hardcover Review (Inglourious Velocirapters)

Sarge ordered me to cut the B.S., so let me be frank, soldiers. Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol from Titan Comics is the kind of high octane, ultra-violent, and relentless comic book that sinks its claws in you like a rabid velociraptor and hauls ass while you barely hang on for dear life! This ain’t your daddy’s adventure serial, troops! Created, written, and illustrated by the ridiculously talented Stuart Jennett, Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol is an R-rated version of the games of “war” and “dinosaurs” my neighborhood friends and I played in my backyard during our childhood, and it is at least twice as fun!

I have the benefit of being exposed to a number of exciting, original, and quality comic books and graphic novels as a reviewer for FBC, but every so often I get to experience the sheer joy of discovering a sequential art story that is both absolutely perfect for my tastes and completely unknown to me. Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol from Titan Comics was one of those undiscovered treasures for me. I had no idea what lay in store when I picked up Jennett’s book (aside from the awesome cover featuring a WWII soldier unloading his machine gun as velociraptors and a Tyrannosaur rushed him), but I could not have been more satisfied by the experience that waited for me inside!

Weaving the tale of a grizzled, tough-as-nails, and time-traveling “Sarge” and his battle against velociraptors, giant spiders, and the Nazis, Chronos Commandos feels like it’s cut from the same cloth as B-movie classics like King Kong and The Lost World, but with an extra dose of “badass” thrown in for good measure. While the concept and breathtaking artwork are enough to inspire an amazing Robert Rodriguez film on their own (Yes, please!), Jennett is more ambitious than offering just a single “mission” involving his excellent cast of characters (including Albert Einstein). Slowly constructing its own mythology, Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol plants the seeds for further adventures, returning friends and villains, and, one assumes, more buckets of gore down the road.

FINAL VERDICT: If your only problem with Inglourious Basterds was the lack of velociraptors, then do not hesitate to sign on for this mission! Seriously, words cannot communicate the amount of awesomeness packed into Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol! This is easily one of the best offerings Titan Comics has ever released, and you will be lamenting your lack of a time machine if you don’t nab a copy while you can.

In all honesty, whether the B-movie content is of interest to you or not, I’d recommend taking the time to enjoy this book on a pure “popcorn” level. Much like movies like Jurassic Park or the more recent Avengers film, Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol doesn’t require its audience to be fanatics of the subject material in order to experience the joy of the ride. It is big, loud, and, most importantly, fun! Trust me, comic book sniffers, you’re sure to have a blast with this one!

Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol is published by Titan Comics and is now available for purchase. (What are ya ladies waiting for?) You can find out more about Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol by visiting the official Titan Comics website.

That’s all for now, comic book sniffers! And, remember Sarge’s advice: Keep firing! Kill ‘em all!
