The Kickstarter Report: ‘Hunter Black Volume One: Betrayer’s Blood!’

Here at Fanboy Comics, we love celebrating independent creators and the extraordinary work that they do to share their talents and vision with audiences everywhere.  For that reason, the FBC staff is excited to highlight the creators behind the long-standing webcomic, Hunter Black, who have been working hard to create weekly strips of their dark fantasy story to the delight of their rabid and loyal fanbase.  After four years of collecting over 250 strips of webcomic goodness, creators Justin Peniston (writer), William Orr (artist), and Jacob Bascle (lettering/logo design) recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to publish their collected strips into a printed trade paperback called Hunter Black Volume One: Betrayer’s Blood!, and they need your help to raise the necessary funds to make their dream a reality!

According to the project’s Kickstarter page, “Hunter Black is what happens when a pair of long-time D&D players read Darwyn Cooke’s adaptations of the Parker novels: hard-boiled fantasy. Think Chinatown set in Middle-Earth starring Samurai Jack.  Hunter Black tells the story of the titular character, who was once the world’s most notorious archer and assassin.  When his employers betrayed him, Hunter was imprisoned in a prison-mine for the Known World’s worst criminals.  Although he escaped, he contracted the horrific wasting disease known as the Hunger Blight, a disease controlled only by The Revenger, the magic sword he carries . . . but Hunter is an archer not a swordsman! All he wants is to live long enough to get revenge on the people that betrayed him.  But, if that’s going to happen, he’ll need to learn the way of the sword.”

The collected volume of Hunter Black will include over 250 pages of story, along with exclusive extras, including notes from the creation of the webcomic, an overview of what goes into a page, script samples, and even a map of the story’s setting, The Known World.

Readers can also learn more about the creators by checking out the following Fanboy Comics podcast and interview featuring Justin Peniston and William Orr:

(Ed. note: Justin hates bananas.) The Kickstarter campaign will close on Wednesday, September 16th, so be sure to donate soon!
