‘Unit 44 #4:’ Comic Book Review

It has all been building to this: the epic showdown between the Freedahken aliens and the human race.  Few may survive, many may perish . . . but one thing is certain: readers will have a blast to the very last page!  With Issue #4, the Alterna Comics series, Unit 44, comes to an end, but not without an action-packed battle of galactic proportions and a sentimental moment for our series’ stars, Agents Gibson and Hatch.

Unit 44 #4 brings all of the puzzle pieces together from a series that began with such a simple, yet adorably fun, premise: two Area 51 employees forgot to pay the rent on the facility’s off-site storage unit, causing the super-secret contents to be sold at public auction.  From that initial issue, readers have followed along as bumbling Agents Hatch and Gibson chased after the Freedahken Crystal, a highly coveted and dangerously powerful artifact, as it made its way into all of the wrong hands.  In this final installment, readers will unveil the fate of the world . . . and whether Hatch and Gibson were successful in cleaning up their original mess.

Writer Wes Locher does not relent with either the action or the hilarity in Issue #4, which is unfortunate only in the sense that the issue goes by so quickly!  Locher has given us a silly and stupendous world where the fate of humanity rests in the hands of a blundering “Odd Couple,” and it could not be more engaging.  Likewise, artist Eduardo Jimenez truly shines in this final issue, with a phenomenally fun double-page spread that showcases the Freedahken/human battle in all of its uproarious glory.  His attention to detail in creating distinct and memorable aliens provided so much fun that I went back for a second and third look.

With all issues of Unit 44 now available digitally through ComiXology, there is no reason not to take a chance on this lighthearted sci-fi adventure!
