‘Boots & Pup: Inspired Laziness’ – TPB Review

Hi, my name is Barbra, and I have an addiction to adorably cute comic books.  Sara Varon’s Robot Dreams, James Kochalka’s Peanutbutter & Jeremy’s Best Book Ever, everything by Scott C . . . I could go on and on.  There is something so amusing and lovable about their heartwarmingly charming characters that I just can’t get enough of them, which is why I was so excited to learn about the all-ages web comic Boots & Pup, which recently collected the first four issues of its comic book series into a printed trade paperback.

Boots & Pup features two alien best friends, and a slew of additional guest stars, who are constantly (and humorously) at odds.  Much like the Odd Couple pairing of Regular Show‘s Mordecai and Rigby, Boots (the straight-laced blue creature) and Pup (the always-in-trouble green critter with a hat) participate in a series of mundane, yet comical, misadventures set to a sci-fi background, ranging from going on a job interview to adopting an orphaned worm.  Where Seinfeld succeeded in featuring each new episode about “nothing,” Boots & Pup likewise shines in maintaining its delightful collection of slice-of-life comic strips.

Series creator John Yuskaitis Jr. takes the reigns on both the writing and art duties of Boots & Pup, constructing a world that is – at the same time – easy to engage for younger readers while also captivating and entertaining for adults.  Yuskaitis, who will celebrate his 10th anniversary of Boots & Pup this coming February, is to be commended on not only the longevity of the creator-owned series, but for creating such lovable characters that could easily transition into an animated series for viewers of all ages.  In fact, Boots & Pup is already pushing the boundaries into various mediums, as Yuskaitis has already created an animated short and a free iOs game featuring series side character Sniffles the Fish.

Boots & Pup: Inspired Laziness is currently available in print through Amazon, and Issue #5 of the series is currently in production.  If you love all things adorable as much as I do, I highly recommend taking a chance on this series!
