Geeks Care: How You Can Help Kids Need to Read and SOVA Community Food and Resource Program

When Fanboy Comics is not providing you with the latest in geek news and entertainment, the FBC staff hopes to offer our readers a myriad of opportunities to give back to the community. We love reading comics, watching movies, and playing video games, but we are never happier than when we are able to help others in need. With Geeks Care: How You Can Help, FBC will provide you a variety of causes that would greatly appreciate your time.

This week's edition of Geeks Care: How You Can Help will focus on the great folks at Whedonopolis and Fandom Charities, non-profit organizations established for the purpose of raising funds and awareness for charitable organizations through fandom events, conventions, and other geek-related activities.  On August 9, 2014, these two great organizations will be hosting An Evening at Caritas: A Night of Karaoke to honor actor Andy Hallett.  Fans in the know will remember Hallett as the actor behind Lorne, the lovable and gentle Deathwok Clan demon on the TV show Angel who ran the karaoke bar Caritas, where all patrons - good and evil - were welcome.  The proceeds from this event will benefit Kids Need To Read, and there will also be a canned food drive to benefit SOVA Community Food and Resource Program.  The Fanboy Comics staff hopes that you will join us in celebrating the memory of Hallett while having a great time and lending your help to two incredible charitable organizations.

An Evening at Caritas will be held at CORKY’S in Sherman Oaks, CA.  Tickets are $30.00 per person which will include appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks.  (Space is limited!)  A no-host bar will also be available.  The evening will feature Joss Whedon-themed songs for your karaoke pleasure and LOTS of drawings in which you can win geek-tastic prizes!  The doors will open at 7:30 p.m., and the singing will begin at 8:30 p.m.

To make the evening even more exciting, special guests and Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel alums Juliet Landau and Camden Toy will be in attendance!

Kids Need to Read works to create a culture of reading for children by providing inspiring books to underfunded schools, libraries, and literacy programs across the United States, especially those serving disadvantaged children. Founded with a passion to improve the lives of disadvantaged children, Kids Need to Read aspires to empower and embolden every last child through a culture of reading. Likewise, SOVA Community Food and Resource Program responds to hunger in our community by providing individuals and families with the resources they need to regain self-sufficiency and independence, including free groceries, case management, counseling, and other supportive services, such as legal counseling and job search assistance.

Readers interested in learning more about Kids Need to Read and SOVA Community Food and Resource Program or in making a direct donation may do so by visiting the organizations' websites.
