The Arkham Sessions, Ep. 85: ‘Make ’Em Laugh”

The Arkham Sessions, hosted by Dr. Andrea Letamendi and Brian Ward, is a weekly podcast dedicated to the psychological analysis of Batman: The Animated Series. Nostalgic, humorous, and even a little educational, each episode promises to lend some insight into the heroes, villains, and classic stories of the Dark Knight!

The Arkham Sessions, Ep. 85 “Make ‘Em Laugh”

This week, we learn a lot about the similarities between Robin and Alfred, particularly their love of comedy. We also get to know the failed comedian, Smilin’ Shecky Rimshot *badum bum*, a.k.a. The Joker! What drives The Joker’s need to be seen as the funniest man in Gotham City?

We also talk about a brand-new graphic novel by Paul Dini called Dark Night: A True Batman Story. If you love Paul Dini, you absolutely need to check out this very personal, true-life account of a night that nearly ended Dini’s love of the Caped Crusader. You can get your copy at your local comic book shop or right here.

Finally, because the late comedian Richard Jeni co-starred in this episode, we take the chance to talk about suicide and those who are tasked with smiling on the outside, when they’re not necessarily smiling on the inside. As always, if you’re located in the United States and need to talk to someone, you can call (800) 273-TALK. This is a 24/7 hotline, so there is always someone willing to listen. You can also visit suicide.org or iasp.info to learn more about international hotlines and other ways for getting help.
