‘Harrow County #10:’ Advance Comic Book Review

This issue is a good jumping-on point for new readers, as we find ourselves at the beginning of a new tale being woven and the introduction of a new potential antagonist. And, when a new villain is introduced in Harrow County, you want to pay attention, because no one is who they appear to be.

If you have gone untouched by Harrow County, now might be a good time to take in this rich world that plays in the realm of myths and folklore. There’s a musicality to this comic; a chamber orchestra is telling the story. It would be like listening to Serge Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” as arranged by Gyorgy Ligeti – magical and unnerving, fantastical and frightening. It’s a child’s bedtime story filled with nightmares. It’s the most beautiful horror book out there.

Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook have grounded their story in the dirt of their country tale, quite literally. 18 years ago, the townspeople killed a witch and buried her at the foot of a tree, and from that tree was birthed two girls. One is our main character, Emmy, who has the ability to control the dark creatures of the forest and almost fell prey to the darkness within herself. That darkness was soon personified by her twin sister, and a battle was fought between the two. For the moment, Emmy has reached a point of peace. The locals still don’t trust her, but she has made some friends. As we begin to explore the lives of her friends, new secrets and new tales are uncovered, and I have no doubt in my mind that Emmy will get drawn in.

Tyler Crook’s colors tie the book together, giving it that children’s book feel that really does make this book that much more special. Everything about this book makes it worth reading. This is on my list of comics I absolutely look forward to reading every month, and it should be for you, as well.
