After reading Harrow County #7 last month and then with the release of the first TPB detailing the first major arc of Emmy’s journey (which I just read and reviewed), my fingers have been twitching to turn the pages of a new issue. Harrow County is ghoulish fun that reads less like a horror story and more like a dark fairy tale – the real fairy tales from the imaginations of Grimm and Poe, not what our Disney-loving pop culture has turned fairy tales into.

Emmy is the eighteen-year-old offspring of a dead witch, born from the side a tree . . . that should be enough to get you to start reading! If that’s not, the woods near her Anne of Green Gables-style farm (and world) are full of haints: dark creatures, some undead, some demons – some of them are friendly, some aren’t. The ones that aren’t are currently being led by Emmy’s twin sister. One such haint is a boy with no skin, whose skin Emmy carries around with her in a satchel. The skin talks to her and tells her what the fleshless boy sees. I want so squeal with delight even typing this.

Emmy’s tale is an exciting one. It’s an adventure into the shadows of Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook’s collective imaginations. There’s great synchronicity in this team’s vision making for a wonderful tale.

Do yourself a favor and start reading this great book.
