‘This Damned Band #4:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Paul Cornell, in his fourth issue of This Damned Band, weaves a masterful tapestry of mysticism, action, comedy, and pathos. It flows smoothly from one tone to the next, never missing a beat and always retaining the rhythm and reality of the story. It’s not often I find myself laughing out loud while reading comics, but I have consistently done so with this series.

This must be creatively fulfilling for artist Tony Parker, as he’s allowed to adjust the style of art in a completely logical and hilarious way to approach the different elements in ways that suit the story without breaking the reality presented.

It’s a similar case with Lovern Kindzierski, whose color palette shifts ever so slightly to accentuate the storytelling devices being used here.

It really is one of the sharpest books out there, approaching satire in a way that doesn’t belittle the characters they are satirizing. Part of this is due to the bittersweet undertones running throughout the issues.

If you’re looking for something different and yet ridiculously good, this book is worth a look.
