‘Zodiac Starforce #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Zodiac Starforce is a sendup of/tribute to those “Magical Girl” manga comics, like Sailor Moon, or . . . others, I guess. They tell me there are other comics like that. I’m not really the target audience for them, though.

So, why did I agree to review Zodiac Starforce? The blurb about it from an editor at Dark Horse read something like this: “I’m a 30-year-old man who’s never read Sailor Moon or any of those other comics, but, even so, I’m in love with this title. I think it’s an incredible, gripping, and funny comic.”

For myself, I’m a 31-year-old man who’s never read Sailor Moon et al., so I thought maybe I might see in Zodiac Starforce what this editor did. I didn’t, quite. I’m not really sold on it yet. Still, it’s an enjoyable title with things to like about it.

Two years ago, a group of high school girls were given magical, evil-fighting powers by the goddess, Astra. They battled monsters and eventually defeated the evil Cimmeria, after which they disbanded, apparently under some rather unfortunate circumstances.

Now, two years later, monsters are returning to our world: bigger, more dangerous monsters than ever before. Does the team need to reassemble? Can they overcome past differences and high school politics long enough to do so?

The premise is compelling enough, and there are definitely some fun and funny moments in this comic. Fans of the “Magical Girl” manga genre will probably find more to enjoy about it than I. Still, I’m intrigued, and there’s definite potential here. Let’s see how things play out in the next issue . . .
