‘Abigail and the Snowman #4:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Finishing out the run of Abigail and the Snowman, a story about a young girl, Abigail, and her best friend Claude, a yeti, being chased by secret government agents, the writer and artist, Roger Landridge (The Muppet Show comics, Popeye), brings his four-issue story to a satisfying, although sometimes bumpy, conclusion.

Much of the first half of this 47-page issue, double its regular length, felt like filler (as did a lot of the third issue). It has been well established in the last three issues that Abigail and Claude are best friends. They took an oath last issue, yet the story comes to a halt to show us how good of friends they are. It isn’t until about halfway through the issue that their friendship plays out as the rest of the story plays out, and it’s enjoyable, fun, and a bit heartwarming. The fact that it’s a book for young people doesn’t mean you should kill the pace of the story in order to rehash what we already know as readers. Also, I think this is the first time any of the characters used any kind of British slang. The word being “jolly.”

But, what I was missing in the third issue, and the first half of this this issue, finally comes into play in the final half of this issue: the playful adventure. The joy of watching these best friends, so different from each other, put themselves in danger to help each other is the joy of book.

Again, despite my opinion of shortcomings in this series, I’d recommend that parents buy this for their kids. It is charming and has a strong girl character, something in this day and age that both girls and boys need to become more accustomed to.
