‘Curse of the Were-A-Saurus:’ Book Review (Curse of the Paleontological Monster)

Curse of the Were-A-Saurus is the third book in Matt Schorr’s series for young readers. It is a fun story about a monstrous dinosaur from another dimension. David, Jake, and Carla are three normal kids in a normal town who periodically deal with invasions of cross-dimensional dinosaurs. These aren’t your ordinary dinosaurs, though; they are the classic monster movie versions. This book challenges our heroes with a were-dinosaur, which is exactly what you’d expect.

This is definitely a book aimed at younger audiences. This is going for the reader who is old enough to read comfortably, but too young for typical YA fare. For the target audience, this is a fun book with some good action and a creative monster. I also really appreciated the fact that Carla never felt like a damsel in distress. There is a bit where the boys have to rescue her, but she doesn’t seem like she is a victim. In fact, the boys spend more time running away and screaming than Carla ever does.

While this book is a good read for the young dinosaur nut, it does have a slightly limited age range. This is not a problem, but it is something to be aware of. I think this is aiming for a similar age range as the Goosebumps series. I don’t think it is quite as long, but I think it is a good fit for that audience.

While this is the third book in the series, the story makes perfect sense without reading the first two. This is just a fun, little book for young readers. And, it does a good job of reminding kids that dinosaurs are cool.
