‘Evil Diva: Volume 2’ – Graphic Novel Review (You Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying)

Diva Beelze isn’t really evil, despite everyone’s wishes. Her father is a bigwig in Hell, and her mother is an attorney, but Diva doesn’t want to hurt anybody. Having been given a magical staff in the first volume, she tries to navigate high school and friends that the parents don’t approve of without letting anyone know that she isn’t really that evil. There is a nice little Buffy vibe, with Diva trying to keep her secret and figure out how to navigate the treacherous waters of high school.

The story here is entertaining and doesn’t feel like anything I have seen before. It is a comic about a high school girl, but it could pass the Bechdel Test. I have been to real schools in the real world that didn’t pass the Bechdel Test. There are also dozens of little references to all sorts of geeky things peppered throughout. Finally, the characters and plot are interesting and fun. There is a whole bit with film noir narration in one issue that is wonderful and the best martini joke I have ever seen. This is one of the best “supernatural beings in high school” stories that I have read in a long time.

This is a cool, all-ages comic that will appeal to the same crowd that liked Sky High, which is honestly one of the best superhero movies ever made. This comic has that same sense of paying homage and playfulness that something like this needs. For example, Diva has been given a purse dog to act as her bodyguard. When threatened, Cerby gets gigantic and grows an extra two heads. Like Cerberus. The three-headed guard of Hades. Anyway. The entire book is full of this sort of stuff.

This is a fun book that treads some new ground. I can easily recommend it for anyone who is looking for a fun, all-ages comic book. There are some cool, little moments and some great storytelling. This is a great reminder that high school is Hell, but that, with the right attitude, you can still make it out alive.
