‘Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time #6’ – Advance Comic Book Review (Trouble in Antarctopolis)

DW Prisoners of Time 6

DW Prisoners of Time 6Prisoners of Time is doing something very unusual. Every issue of this comic follows a new incarnation of The Doctor, but they are still telling one continuous story. According to math, we have made it to the sixth Doctor and two of his companions, Peri the human and Frobisher the shapeshifting penguin. To be fair, Frobisher is not really a penguin, but he spends most of his time in the shape of one. In case you haven’t figured it out by now, this is a silly comic. It is also a very fun comic that introduces a new wrinkle into the ongoing plot.

In order to make Frobisher feel at home, the crew of the TARDIS are visiting Antarctopolis, the mega city on the South Pole. They are visiting the penguin preserve when things go, predictably, wrong. There are thrilling chases, funny disguises, mysterious villains, and more thrilling chases. So much running. In other words, it’s Doctor Who.

That might be the best compliment I can give the comic. The art by John Ridgeway is wonderful and really captures the danger and fun of the series. Scott and David Tipton have written another fun comic that crams in nearly as much excitement as humor, and that’s in a comic with a talking, shapeshifting penguin. The thing is, as good as this comic is, and it is good, it also feels like Doctor Who and that is really the most important thing.

Now, I have one small gripe and another much tinier one. The tiny one involves a flashback near the end that I didn’t realize was a flashback. I didn’t want Wayne and Garth going “Deedlie Doo,” but I wouldn’t have minded a little more indication. The real (small) issue I had with this comic book was the slight case of too many villains. The comic brought a few old villains back that really didn’t need to be there. It wasn’t a huge problem, and it certainly didn’t affect my enjoyment of the comic, but it did bug me a bit.

So, long story short, this is a really fun little comic that contributes to a pretty cool comic arc. If you are a Doctor Who fan, you kind of need to be reading this series.
