‘Todd: The Ugliest Kid on Earth #2’ – Advance Comic Book Review (Ugly on the Inside, Paper Bag on the Outside.)

Todd 2When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. When life falsely convicts you of the brutal murder of several children, lemonade ain’t gonna cut it. Todd, the ugly protagonist of Perker and Kristensen’s hilarious comic book, navigates the labyrinthine system of prison life with a positive outlook that would put that lemonade to shame.

Todd, who spends the entire comic with a brown paper bag over his head, assumes everyone he meets is kind and gentle. This optimism is even more remarkable when you consider the fact that almost everyone he meets would be the worst person alive in any other comic. There is the inept sheriff who is obsessed with Nancy Grace, the prison Nazi gang that is a prison Nazi gang, and the psycho-killer who keeps children’s heads on his piano. It is telling that the killer isn’t necessarily the worst character.

I love the story and the characters, but the art is phenomenal. Everybody is slightly caricatured, but still somewhat realistic looking. I don’t know how they did that. (Editor’s note: Talent.) The art does a wonderful job reinforcing the feeling that this is a terrible version of the world. Also, the art is often as funny as the story.

I love this comic. It is funny, it is cynical, and it is weird. There are several obvious jokes that are set up and then ignored, while more subversive and funnier stuff happens instead. And then, they set up familiar, disturbing situations and ignore them, while more disturbing stuff happens. If you like your humor dark and your satire biting, then you should check this one out.

Four and a half Disturbing Prison Groupies out of Five
