April 19, 2013
Today is April 19th, and you know what that means, kiddies. According to the short-lived fan favorite The Sarah Connor Chronicles, today is Skynet Activation Day!
As any well-educated fanboy knows, Skynet is the artificially intelligent computer system that serves as a major villain in the Terminator franchise. According to James Cameron's Terminator lore, Skynet was originally installed into the U.S. military mainframe to control the national arsenal on August 4, 1997. (Despite this fact, The Sarah Connor Chronicles sees this date a little differently.)
You're invited to join the creators of Solestar for a graphic novel signing on Wednesday, April 24th, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Golden Apple Comics in Los Angeles, CA!
Golden Apple will continue its monthly wine mixer series by hosting comic book creator Siike Donnelly and a number of the 70+ artists who contributed to the jam-style graphic novel, Solestar. Solestar is an original superhero story whose protagonist has only 24 hours to live. It features artwork donated by over 70 different artists and educational information regarding brain aneurysms, the proceeds of which will go to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
As a brain aneurysm survivor, Donnelly was forced to rebuild his speech patterns and relearn how to walk. With his company, The Naïve Project, he led a successful Kickstarter campaign to publish Solestar in early 2013. According to Donnelly, “I wanted to create a superhero that knew loss right from the start. It’s kind of the staple when creating someone with powers. They have to come from tragedy to obtain victory. This is something I now understand on a personal level. Hopefully, victory follows my tragedy with this project.”
You're invited to join Fanboy Comics for a graphic novel signing on Saturday, April 27th, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Hyaena Gallery in Burbank, CA!
Writer and FBC co-founder Sam Rhodes will be on hand at the LA's premier gallery for Dark Art to sign copies of Fanboy Comics‘ graphic novels, Identity Thief and Something Animal. Fans who stop by the gallery will have a chance to pick up their very own signed copies and to purchase the official Fanboy Comics t-shirt, so that they can show their geek pride in style.
One of the nice things about being a film geek and living in Southern California is all of the great movie events that get staged here. With that in mind, here’s a heads-up for movie fans living in the greater Los Angeles area. On Wednesday, April 24, the American Film Institute will be presenting AFI Night at the Movies. According to a press release, the evening “is an event of extraordinary scale with classic American films spanning five decades screening on a single night - each with an introduction by the film's star or filmmaker. Mystery, drama, romance, horror, science fiction, and animated family entertainment will all be represented.”
