Mind MGMT V1For a book with the word “mind” in it, Mind MGMT requires a surprising amount of thought, go figure. This is a comic of conspiracies and intrigue and will require a second and maybe a third read to fully appreciate all the moving pieces.

I’m not really sure what to say about Mind MGMT. The book lacks many of the things I normally latch onto in stories such as strong, well-defined characters, a completely unique setting, or brilliant art. If I had to compare it, I’d say it’s a bit like Lost; it’s a work where a lot is happening, and I’m more interested in having a discussion and dissecting it than I am giving a thumbs up or thumbs down on it.

I don’t want to give away what is compelling about the Mind MGMT setting, so I’ll just say that it’s subtle, different, and thought provoking. This first volume moves at a snail’s pace, but, by the end of it, I was intrigued by the workings of this world, frustrated by the plot, but ultimately left craving more of it. To that purpose, the end of each issue includes a Mind MGMT case file, which are easily my favorite part of the series. Reading about these incredible individuals, what they were capable of doing, and what they’re not sparked my imagination and says more about the rules of this world than the primary story does.

Kindt’s art is an oddity. It’s incredibly rough with exaggerated characteristics on characters, but I find myself enjoying it. The pencil-like drawings and coloration provide a different and nice feel, and the notes from the Mind MGMT field guide provide an extra bit of charm and info on the organization.

I’ll stop there. This is a series that saying much more will ruin the surprises in store, but if you like a good conspiracy story and unraveling a huge mystery, then check out this book. And, if you do, I’d love the opportunity to dissect and discuss what I’ve read with others, but move quickly, before the Immortals come for us.
