Uncanny Skullkickers 1Uncanny Skullkickers #1 is the new jumping-on point for Skullkickers, Jim Zub’s hilarious fantasy book about two mercenaries who may or may not have just saved the world. Skullkickers is everything that is awesome about comics today. It is an irreverent, creator-owned work of art by some of the hottest, up-and-coming professionals in the industry today.

Jim Zub delivers a crazy world full of giant monsters, insane magic, and some of the coolest action heroes you’ll ever meet. His skullkickers aren’t quite good guys and gals, they are just the heroes we’re stuck with. Zub provides the book with great dramatic story arcs, and a great sense of humor, while the amazing artistic team just knocks it out of the park. Whether Edwin Huang is drawing huge action scenes, silly montages, or a dead dwarf sleeping with the fishes, he always amazes with great detail and wonderful layouts. The rest of the team, including Kevin Raganit, Misty Coats, Ross Campbell, and Ludwig Olimba, really pulls off a dramatic and colorful world to house all this zany action. My favorite part of the book has to be the awesome lettering by Marshall Dillon. During fight scenes, they insert dramatic “sound effects” like turtle smash, and Dillon’s lettering really drives it all home.

This issue is an awesome jumping-on point for a great series. Even better, if you like it, Zub has made it really easy to get caught up by providing the early issues online at skullkickers.keenspot.com. There are also trade paperbacks and a cool Treasure Trove hardcover edition available. So, make sure you check out this awesome comic, or a ravenous Thool might get you!
