Read This Week:

Giants Beware! by Jorge Aguirre and Rafael Rosado

Wow. What a week. I re-enrolled in school and got an internship as the assistant to a comic editor. How awesome is that?! Didn’t have a ton of time to read this week, but I did read a new all-ages book called Giant’s Beware!

Giant’s Beware! is a super fun adventure by Rafael Rosado and Jorge Aguirre that tells the story of Claudette and her friends as they journey to defeat a giant. Claudette is an awesome heroine. She’s fearless, headstrong, and always ready to fight. Together with Marie, a girl who desperately wants to be a princess, and her little brother Gaston, a cowardly lion-type who loves to cook, Claudette must travel the land and learn the real meaning of bravery and friendship.

Aguirre has crafted some incredible characters that are fun and flawed. They all have something to learn, some emotional obstacle to overcome, and the journey is really about them learning to overcome it. He does a great job of balancing humor, drama, and action. He doesn’t dumb the story down for kids, but he also avoids violence or any potty jokes, ensuring that this is a great story for kids to read on their own or with their parents.

Rosado’s art is fun and colorful. His characters are cute and very expressive. Even when drawing monsters, he always keeps the art light and fun; there won’t be any nightmares from reading this book. The book is well paced and will definitely hold the attention of young kids. The adventure is fun, and the kids solve their problems with courage and wits instead of violence. This is a great read whether you are a kid or an adult, and one I definitely recommend picking up.

So, that’s what I read this week. What have you been reading? Let me know and I’ll add it to my ‘To Read’ List. Until then, keep reading!
