Astonishing X-Men #51
by Marjorie Liu, Mike Perkins, and Andy Troy

There’s going to be some talk about this issue being a publicity stunt and a marketing ploy, but forget all that; this is just a really good X-Men comic. Marjorie Liu has been slowly building to this issue since she took the series over, and the payoff is wonderful. There’s some action in the beginning, but most of this issue deals with the drama that goes hand in hand with a wedding day. The love and care with which Liu handles these characters makes this the issue to buy this week. There are wonderful moments when we see the very human side of these superheroes. Liu even addresses the gay marriage issue with different characters weighing in, and she handles it very gracefully, without being preachy or impeding her story at all. Buy this issue, but not for the spectacle; buy it because it’s good art and it’s worth your money.

Saga
by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Wow! The depths of Brian K. Vaughan’s mind must be a very scary place. He can write incredibly touching and heartwarming stuff and a page later write something incredibly disturbing. What is so wonderful about Saga is that Fiona Staples can actually keep up with them, and deliver the most bizarre and amazing creatures to grace a comic page. This issue of Saga gives us some further insight into one of the Freelancers hunting our heroes, while Vaughan also explores Marko’s past a little. Vaughan and Staples are crafting something truly special with Saga, and if you aren’t on board yet, you really should be. Most stores are starting to get 2nd, 3rd, or 4th printings of the first 3 issues, so now is a great time to pick them up, and read what will most likely be the comic series of the year.

Wonder Woman
by Brian Azzarello, Tony Akins, Kano, and Dan Green

This book is awesome. Wonder Woman is tough, smart, and kicks some serious butt. Brian Azzarello has crafted an interesting and exquisitely intricate plot involving the Gods, and Princess Diana is stuck right in the middle of it all. Art duties in this issue are shared by Kano and Tony Akins, but the transition is seamless, and the action scenes are perfectly paced and wonderfully epic. The highlight of this book continues to be the new take on the classic Greek Gods, and Hades has quickly become my favorite. Pick up this book if you like to see Wonder Woman kick butt in a fashionably gothic wedding dress, if you love creepy kids with flaming candle heads, or if you just like awesome comics.
