I was pretty complimentary of the first issue of Leaving Megalopolis: Surviving Megalopolis by Gail Simone and Jim Calafiore. There’s a reason for this, just as there is for the compliments I’m about to dump into this review. This book, this series, and these creators are all wonderful.

This issue shifts a bit more towards the survivors of this insane world than those creating the insanity, especially with Megalopolis hero Mina Gutierrez.  While there’s less of the psychotic superheroes in this issue, there’s enough to really show that they are the shining, bright spot of this series. The heroes are essential, don’t get me wrong, but an entertaining bad guy will make anything better. That being said, Southern Belle steals any and all scenes she exists in. This issue has really proven that, as she busts in and makes everything so much more fun.

Calafiore and Simone are a terrific team, really finding a way to make a weird concept work. The art is stellar, and colorist Jason Wright really hits the tones with pale blues and vivid colors, where the respective schemes apply. The writing is excellent, as well, with each character feeling fully formed and unique with each appearance.

Overall, this is still an insane book, and that is a massive compliment. Fun, crude, and absolutely over the top,  this is very entertaining and should remain that way for however long this universe exists.
