The comic series, Satanic Hell, has returned with its third issue published by Alterna Comics, continuing the tale of the rebellious death metal band that dares to take on the ultra-conservative (and fairly evil) mega church that rules writer Grigoris Douros’ nightmarish version of the state of Texas with an iron first. Along with artists Kevin Enhart and Newel Anderson, colorist Jimmy Kerast, and letterer E.T. Dollman, Douros delivers an extra strong dose of Satanic Hell in issue #3 for those who’ve devoured the previous issues and are hungry for more.
MINOR SPOILERS BELOW
As I mentioned in my previous review of this issue (link available below), before Satanic Hell found a home at Alterna, Satanic Hell #3 really is the issue that Douros and his creative team find their footing and demonstrate to readers what a standard issue of the series should feel like. While touching on a number of hot-button topics such as police violence, homophobia, and the labeling of Harry Potter and other pop culture as “satanic” or “witchcraft,” Satanic Hell #3 never forgets to bring the fun and the action into the mix. With its exaggerated tone, this is the perfect mix for the book and hints at good things to come down the road for readers of the series.
I also still feel, as stated in my previous review, that the “bonus content” for this issue is a stellar addition the book:
“This issue features a look at a propaganda pamphlet from The Texas Council of Churches covering the threat to your children that is the band Satanic Hell, emissaries of evil. The piece is really clever, containing stories of teens “led astray” by the band and a tip sheet outlining what concerned church-goers can do to help squelch the spread of this “dangerous and evil” presence in Texas. The issue also features a Satanic Hell poster for their show at the Hellfire Club and an awesomely authentic-looking mesh of doodles and lyrics written by one of the band members on a bar napkin.”
There’s no question that I still feel the creative team has found a strength in this type of comic book “extras” and that they’d be wise to continue this winning trend in their future issues of Satanic Hell.
