Through the theatre, new and magical worlds can be unlocked for the audience, providing them with the opportunity to experience the fantastical, the frightening, the ferocious, and the funny.  In ‘Twas Brillig – The Nonsense of Lewis Carroll, an original play that is currently playing at Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group in North Hollywood, CA, the realms of fantasy and madness are at play in a fast-paced collage of Lewis Carroll’s works.

In full disclosure, the play was written and directed by Fanboy Comics’ own Steven W. Alloway, who has often worked with Zombie Joe’s in past performances as an actor.  Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group is known throughout the Los Angeles area for producing works that verge on and push the boundaries of the dark, twisted, and fascinatingly strange, and ‘Twas Brillig finds a fitting home at the theatre while encapsulating the often humorous literary nonsense for which Carroll is best known. 

The play’s depictions of the writer’s best-known poems, including “The Hunting of the Snark,” “Jabberwocky,” and excerpts from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, are brought to life through a lively and fearless cast of players, all of whom appear to have a blast while dissecting and attempting to make sense of Carroll’s word play.  In addition, the play is made even more fantastic by the colorful and elaborate costumes, props, and puppets that brought the jabberwocky and other mythic creatures to life.  Set in a black box theatre, the play does not require a great deal of space for the poems to come to life, but, instead, it allows for the scenes to be seeded on the stage with room to grow and bloom in the minds of the audience.

‘Twas Brillig moves at a brisk pace, with the show lasting just under an hour, and fans of Lewis Carroll should take note of the performance, which will be playing at the theatre on Sundays at 7 p.m. through June 29, 2014.
